The town of Ramsgste is a seaside resort situated on the Isle of Thanet in East Kent, England, UK. One of the most popular and great English seaside towns of the 19th century. Its name comes from Hraefn's ate (meaning cliff gap).
Ramsgate is a relatively big town, with population of more than 38,000. It lies over a harbour which took more than 100 years to be built - from 1749 to 1850. The harbour established Ramsgate as one of the major British trade ports. In 1821 King George IV bestowed Royal status on the harbour, a title no one other English harbour holds, after his visit with the Royal Yacht Squadron. John Shaw Senior and John Shaw Junior designed an obelisk in honour of the King.
The Harbour provides shelter from the effect of storms. It is now the site of one of the largest and most thriving marinas on the English south coast (there were 12,000 visiting boats in 2005), with Trans Europa Ferries passenger and freight ferries frequently sailing to Ostend in Belgium.
Ramsgate's main industries are tourism and fishing.
The town’s close proximity to the continent has played a great role in its history. Ramsgate have witnessed three great landings which have changed the course of England’s history-the Romans in 43 AD, the Saxons in 449 AD; and St Augustine in 597 AD, the first Archbishop of Canterbury, who brought the Christianity to Britain.
