Holland Park, London, England
Karin Modig
Holland Park first opened in 1952, and is situated about five minutes walk from Holland Park tube station in west London. It is the largest park in The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea, but small compared to many other public parks in the city. The park is named after Sir Henry, earl of Holland, a former resident of Holland House, which the park forms part of the grounds of.
The historic house, which was linked with royalty throughout its lifetime, was bombed and badly damaged during the Second World War. One of the wings has been restored and hosts a youth hostel, the former ballroom is now a restaurant, and temporary exhibitions are held in other surviving rooms.
Woodland trails, manicured lawns and formal gardens are all to be found within this park, which is also home to wildlife such as squirrels, peacocks, hedgehogs and koi carp.
In the summertime, Holland Park plays host to both open-air theatre and opera performances. It is also the site of the Kyoto Japanese Garden, an ecology garden and rose gardens built for the 1991 London festival of Japan. Facilities include childrens play areas, various sports facilities, and a cafeteria.
