Broadstairs is a relatively big town situated between Ramsgate( on the south) and Margate(on the north-west) on the Isle of Thanet, Kent, England, UK. The town is a beautiful, friendly seaside resort with population of about 22,000. The place is also known as the “Jewel in Thanet’s crown”. It is also not faraway from Dover and Canterbury.
Broadstairs is located above a harbour which has been notorious for smuggling in the area in the past. Now days it is a popular resort with seven sandy beaches with two of them-Joss Bay and Botany Bay-have been both awarded the Blue flag rural beach award in 2005.
On the hill above Joss bay is Kingsgate Castle which has its own bay. Once it was the home of Lord Holland, now a private residence.
Broadstairs hasn’t change much over the past fifty years. The visitors can still experience its cozy and friendly, relaxing atmosphere.
The famous writer Charles Dickens wrote “David Copperfield” in Bleak House, situated above the harbour in Broadstairs, were he was a frequent visitor. As a child, Queen Victoria spent numerous summers at Pierremont Hall, Broadstairs. No wonder they fell in love with this beautiful town.
The Water Gala has been held every August for more than 117 years. Each June there is a Charles Dickens festival and craft fair and folk festival are also part of the summer calendar.
