Margate is a seaside resort situated on the Isle of Thanet in Kent, England, UK. A relatively small town, it has a population of approximately 55,700. From Meregate in 1254 its name became Margate in 1299.
Margate has been a well known and much visited resort, with its beaches covered with the finest sand. No wonder it was a traditional holiday destination for Londoners, famous for more than 250 years.
From poor fishing town Margate quickly expanded over the years. The major boost to the town’s popularity and to the area’s economy was the introduction of the steamboats in 1816. So popular were the boat cruises that even the appearance of the railway in 1846 couldn’t overshadow their fame and they continued to run until finally withdrawn in 1967.
After the sunbathing became popular Margate was the first resort to have donkey rides and the first to introduce deck chairs, in 1898; with pleasure boats operating from Margate beach.
The first railway station in Margate was called Margate Sands and opened in December 1846.
Margate has survived a few major natural disasters. On 1st of January 1877 the pier was sliced through by a storm-driven wreck that left about 50 people cut off the mainland until next day. The destructed pier was hit by another storm on 11th of January 1978.
In March 1949 a storm hit the North Kent Coast. Margate was one of the badly affected towns when a tidal surge flooded the coast, reaching 15 miles inland.
Unfortunately for Margate, in recent times, most of the English travel abroad. These days this lovely town is hardly its own eminent self. One of its modern attractions, Dreamland Amusement Park is threatened with closure.
Tracey Emin, a controversial contemporary artist, has been brought up in Margate.
