Varna, the biggest city on the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast, is situated in its northern part, and is commonly referred to as the "Sea Capital of Bulgaria". It is the third largest city in Bulgaria after Sofia and Plovdiv, with a population of 351,552 according to the census from the 10th of January, 2006.
Varna is the capital of Varna Province and also a major port on the Black sea. The city is mostly an industrial centre and former base of the Bulgarian Navy, but it is also a famous seaside resort.
With its beautiful Sea Garden along the golden sandy beach, Varna is an attractive tourist destination.
Varna originates from an ancient Greek trading colony, called Odessos, about 580 BC.
The city is well known for its Neolithic necropolis where The Gold of Varna, the oldest gold treasure to be found by archaeologists, was discovered.
The largest remains of Roman baths in Bulgaria, are also discovered in Varna; they date back in 2nd century CE.
Varna is a major economic centre for Bulgaria. Many industries are developed in the region, including shipbuilding, trade and transportation, manufacturing.
The tourism is highly developed as well, with the nearby resorts of Albena, Golden Sands, Constantine and Helena, Riviera and many others, each year attracting millions of visitors from all over the world.
In September 2004, FDI Magazine proclaimed Varna the "South-eastern Europe City of the Future", citing its strategic location, fast-growing economy, rich cultural heritage and high quality education.
