United Kingdom

United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland is a sovereign state and a political union of four constituent countries: England, Wales and Scotland on the Island of Great Britain; and Northern Ireland.

UK is located mainly on the island of Great Britain and also on the northeast part of Northern Ireland. It shares border with Republic of Ireland on the north and is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean; with the Irish Sea between the islands of Ireland and Great Britain, the North Sea on the east, the English Channel on the south as its parts. United Kingdom has other territories, including the Falkland Islands and Gibraltar; the Channel Islands and the Isle of Man are British Islands but not part from UK.

The population of United Kingdom is estimated to 59,834,300, based on the Office for National Statistics census from 2004. This makes UK the third largest in the European Union, behind Germany and France. Its population density is one of the highest in the world. More then a quarter of the whole British population lives in England’s south-west with more then 8 million in the English capital - London.
